Award Recognizes Going Beyond Minimum Requirements to Assure Transparency
The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has presented the El Paso County Budget and Finance Department with its highest recognition, the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The GFOA Excellence in Financial Reporting Program was established in 1945 to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond minimum requirements of accepted accounting principles in the spirit of transparency and full disclosure.
El Paso County Chief Administrative and Financial Officer Nicola Sapp commented, “We are honored and excited to receive this recognition for excellence. In compliance with state statutes and federal regulations, we compile our financial statements which an independent auditing firm audits, but this certificate recognizes that our staff goes above and beyond those legal requirements to provide a more robust and transparent Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). The Government Financial Officers Association, reviews it and this certificate recognizes our report and our staff for “Excellence.”
Board of County Commissioners President Darryl Glenn read the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence into the record during the Thursday February 9, 2017 Board meeting, “This Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a Government and its management. The Financial Reporting and Achievement Award is presented by the GFOA to the El Paso County Financial Services Department.
“I’m so proud of you,” Commissioner Glenn told members of the County Financial Services Department. This is so critical. People want to know how their money is being spent. You’ve received it every year since I’ve been here.”
Commissioner Mark Waller added, “In a world where Government is often accused of not being transparent, it’s incredibly satisfying and rewarding to know that we have a finance department that is recognized for transparency. Thank you so much for doing that and thanks for keeping us out of trouble. We really appreciate it.”
