El Paso County administrative and elected administrative offices and affiliated agencies, including El Paso County Public Health, the Pikes Peak Workforce Center, CSU Extension, the offices of the 4th Judicial District Attorney, El Paso County Public Trustee and El Paso County Combined Courts will be closed Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, in observance of Presidents’ Day.
The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder North Branch Office in Union Town Center (Union and Research Parkway) will be open for its regular Saturday hours (8a to 1p) Feb. 18, but there will be no driver’s license service that day because of scheduled computer upgrades at the Colorado Department of Revenue.
Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday originating with an 1880 Act of Congress honoring George Washington’s Birthday (February 22, 1732) as a holiday. In 1968 Congress adopted a uniform holiday plan aimed at giving American workers as many three-day holidays as possible. Discussions leading up to the passage of that legislation suggested that changing the name to Presidents’ Day would consolidate the recognition of both George Washington’s Birthday and Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday (February 12, 1809).
The third Monday in February each year is set aside for the official observance of Presidents’ Day.
