El Paso County, CO, March 17, 2017 – The Board of El Paso County Commissioners at its regular meeting on Thursday voted unanimously to approve a Proclamation recognizing the challenges and dedication of single parents and proclaimed Tuesday, March 21, 2017, as “Single Parents’ Day” in El Paso County.
“The responsibility of raising children in today’s society is even more challenging when it falls on the shoulders of single parents,” said Commissioner Peggy Littleton as she read the Proclamation into the record. “Parents invest unlimited time, energy, and devotion in order to provide their children with the love, support, and guidance needed to recognize their full potential as productive and successful adults.”
President Ronald Reagan proclaimed March 21, 1984, as National Single Parents Day. Colorado became the first state to enact a proclamation recognizing March 21 as “Single Parents’ Day” in 1993.
“We want our children to grow up surrounded by love and friendship,” said Janice Moglen, who leads the Coalition for Single Parents’ Day. “Just like diamonds, families are precious and unique.”
She thanked commissioners for honoring single parents in the region.
“This is a labor of love,” said Commissioner Stan VanderWerf. “Thank you for you dedication and service to the community.”
The Coalition for Single Parents’ Day hopes the designated day will eventually be recognized in all states. The group invites single parents and others to meet from 7 to 9 a.m. Monday, March 20 at Starbucks, 7 S. Tejon St.
