Next Section of Roadwork Will Require Closure of Peterson AFB East Gate
One section the of the Marksheffel Road South Improvement project is set to wrap up on Monday, April 3, and the next section of the project will begin resulting in a week-long closure of the East Gate to Peterson Air Force Base.
The Peterson East Gate will be closed beginning Sunday, April 2 and running through April 9 in order to tie the gate configuration into the new Marksheffel improvements and speed up construction work through that area. All traffic entering Peterson Air Force Base next week must do so either through Peterson Road gate on the north of the base or the Stewart Avenue on the east side of the base.
With work now completed through the Marksheffel at Colorado 94 intersection the detour signs at Colorado 94 and Space Village will be removed and CO 94 will reopen at about 11 a.m. on Monday, April 3. That stretch had been closed while crews rebuilt the eastern half of the intersection at Marksheffel and 94.
Drivers still need to pay attention to signs and expect continued construction through the area.
The 11-mile long Marksheffel Road South Improvement project is funded by the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority. The contract for improvements to the corridor was awarded to Wildcat Construction in November 2015 and construction in various areas of the roadway has been underway for the past year. The project will be completed by the summer of 2017.
El Paso County appreciates drivers’ patience and understanding as critical safety and capacity improvements are completed on this major north-south transportation corridor.
El Paso County Public Works is responsible for the maintenance of more than 2,100 miles of public roadway, ranging from major thoroughfares in urban areas to rural gravel roads and neighborhood streets and cul-de-sacs.
