Property Acquired for Bridge Replacement, Sidewalks and Trail Realignment
Demolition of the former Sunflower Motel at 3703 West Colorado Avenue is the latest milestone as construction work continues on the West Avenue Action Plan project.
The old motel property is one of several that were acquired by El Paso County to accommodate a wider, safer and more attractive link between Historic Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs. The motel property will be used to accommodate a new Adams Crossing Bridge over Fountain Creek, a center turn lane for vehicle traffic, realignment of the Midland Trail, pedestrian sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
El Paso County has contracted with Wildcat Construction to build the project over two years with completion scheduled for December 2018. The new roadway is designed to be a "safe and social” compatible link between the two historic districts of Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs and will serve as an attractive gateway for visitors going to Manitou Springs and Ute Pass. The $30 million multi-jurisdictional project is funded through the voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority.
When the project is completed, the US 24 West business route will become a three-lane roadway, with one lane in each direction, a dedicated center turn lane, bicycle lanes in each direction, improved sidewalks and storm water drainage with curbs and gutters on both sides of the roadway and attractive street lighting. The Midland Trail will also be extended through the corridor and significant improvements will be made to the old water and sanitary sewer line systems in the area. Electrical and communications lines will be moved underground and storm sewers will be installed.
Drivers should watch carefully for traffic direction signs and expect occasional minor delays throughout the construction project but West Colorado Avenue and Manitou Springs businesses will be open throughout construction.
