Rich Harvey’s Type 1 Great Basin Team assumed command of the Waldo Canon Fire at 6 p.m. on June 24 from the local Type 3 Team.
Monday’s Events:
MAFFS (Modular Airborne Firefighting System) were used today to protect Palmer Reservoir and Eagle Lake Camp. The MAFFS are self-contained units used for aerial firefighting that can be loaded onto a C-130 Hercules, a military cargo transport, which then allows the aircraft to be used as an air tanker against wildfires. Aircraft was also used to protect Rampart Range Road along the north and east flanks of the fire. The fire made a significant run today toward Palmer Reservoir and became established across Rampart Range Road. Point protection continues near Cedar Heights subdivision and Cascade.
Community meetings were held this evening at the Cheyenne Mountain High School and Summit Elementary school in Divide. Over 750 people attended these meetings. Local County, city, US Forest Service representatives and Incident Management Team members were on hand to present and answer questions.
The plan for tomorrow is to keep the fire south of Rampart Range Road where possible and out of Queens Canyon using type 1 crews (Hotshots), and aircraft. Continue point protection in Cedar Heights and Cascade communities. Begin preparing Lucky 4 Road for indirect line construction. Continue structure preparation and protection around Palmer Reservoir and Eagle Lake Camp. Operations will plan for indirect line construction along north and west flanks of the fire.
