Our videographer is especially looking for footage from June 26, when the fire grew rapidly. Drop a CD or DVD off with Security at the Incident Command Post entrance at Holmes Middle School, 2455 Mesa Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80904. Or e-mail a link or clip to cineshine@aol.com. Or call 719-328-4334.
Today’s Update:
Firefighters experienced a quiet night on the Waldo Canyon Fire. Moisture produced by thunderstorms yesterday kept fire activity down overnight. Crews worked to suppress a few interior hotspots above Highway 24. Previously unburned interior islands continued to burn and produce smoke over the fire. The spot fires north of Rampart Reservoir are 100% mopped up.
Thunderstorms will continue over the fire today. These slow tracking storms may produce gusty and erratic winds. Weather will continue to be hot and dry. Today, crews will be focusing their efforts on the northern perimeter of the fire to secure the line along West Monument Creek. Firefighters will be patrolling all areas along the eastern and southern fireline for any remaining hotspots. Crews will continue mop-up to secure the western perimeter of the fire between Rampart Reservoir and Highway 24. Fire equipment will be working into the middle of the week to complete the contingency line along Mount Herman Road. Crews hope to have the contingency line between Mount Herman Road and Rampart Reservoir completed today. Aircraft will remain available if needed.
With the progress made on the fire, crews will begin rehabilitating contained portions of the fire. Firefighters will be working to remove hazard trees along Rampart Range Road today. Crews are also working to create a Structure Protection Pre-Plan for the area of Springdale. A number of firefighting resources are being released from the fire today to become available for other fires burning throughout the West.
