Waldo Canyon Fire
Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Update

Key BAER Messages
- The communities surrounding the Waldo Canyon Fire live in an environment where the canyons within the burned area can produce flash floods.
- For their safety, communities need to monitor local weather reports and public safety bulletins, along with local road closures, emergency notifications, weather alerts, follow local county advisories, and act accordingly.
- Multiple agencies, including the US Forest Service and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), are working together and coordinating with local cooperators who assist affected landowners prepare for rain events.
Status of BAER Efforts
The Waldo Canyon Fire Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team has completed their field work to ground truth and finalize a Soil Burn Severity Map for the Waldo Canyon Fire. The Final Soil Burn Severity Map has been posted to InciWeb and is available online at http://www.inciweb.org/incident/2929/. BAER Team specialists are now using the data they gathered to analyze and complete modeling to determine the predicted flow levels for future rain events. Team members continue to work to identify Values-at-Risk (VAR) within and downstream of the burn area. They are discussing possible BAER treatments that will be effective with reducing storm impacts within the burn area. The BAER assessment team is holding daily briefings to discuss the BAER report progress and team observations made during that day.
BAER Team PIOs hosted a field media tour on the Waldo Canyon Fire yesterday. BAER Team specialists and a representative from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) demonstrated soil sampling techniques and spoke about the BAER program.
The Team continues to work closely with representatives from the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands (PSICC), as well as the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Cooperation continues with a number of local government agencies, including El Paso County and the City of Colorado Springs, to prepare for any rain events. The BAER Assessment Team will finalize and present its BAER report to PSICC Forest Supervisor Jerri Marr for her review.
