Motorists Should Expect Delays in the Construction Zone
Colorado Springs, CO, Thursday, August 30, 2012 – The El Paso County Public Services Department will begin construction on the second phase of the Meridian Road Improvements project. Utilities relocation work has begun and, when completed, this project will provide capacity enhancements and safety improvements along Meridian Road from Stapleton Drive to just south of Rex Road. This project, funded by the voter approved PPRTA, is an extension of the improvements that were recently completed in the first phase construction between Woodmen Road and Stapleton Drive.
The improvements in phase two include roadway widening to complete the four lane section with a grassy median northward to Indian Paint Trail before transitioning back to two lanes just south of Rex Road. The widening will also incorporate right and left turn lanes as required. Eastbound right turn lanes will also be added at the Stapleton Drive and Londonderry intersections with Meridian Road. A new storm water drainage structure will be constructed approximately 1000 feet north of Londonderry. Pavement resurfacing and restriping will occur between Stapleton Drive and Londonderry.
Motorists should use caution through the construction zone with lane shifts and minor delays along Meridian Road, and at intersections with Stapleton Drive, Tourmaline Drive, Londonderry Drive and Indian Paint Trail. The concrete trail which runs along the east side of Meridian Road will be closed to pedestrian traffic between Londonderry Drive and Rex Road beginning on about September 4, in conjunction with the roadway widening in that area. Century Link, Black Hills Energy and Mountain View Electric Association will have utility related construction work during roadway construction.
It is currently anticipated that the contractor, Rocky Mountain Materials & Asphalt, will complete the majority of the improvements during this construction season with the project completed next Spring depending on the weather.
