SHERIFF TERRY MAKETA ANNOUNCES INFORMATION SHARING WITH NATIONAL DATA EXCHANGE (N-DEx)

Through partnership and joint effort with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Sheriff Terry Maketa is pleased to announce the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is the first agency in the State of Colorado to share valuable criminal justice information with the National Data Exchange (N-DEx), a system which provides nationwide connectivity for local, state, tribal, and federal systems for the exchange of information.

N-DEx was developed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division.  As part of the implementation plan, CJIS began a phased integration of OneDOJ (an information repository and database for Federal Law Enforcement only) into N-DEx in July 2009.  With data from agencies participating in N-DEx, and data merged from OneDOJ, N-DEx provides law enforcement agencies an investigative tool to search, link, analyze, and share criminal justice information such as incident reports, field contacts, and incarceration data to enhance law enforcement’s ability to fight crime.  It allows participating agencies to link information across jurisdictional boundaries by detecting relationships between people, places, things, and crime characteristics. 

As of August 13, 2012, the Sheriff’s Office is actively “pushing” data from their internal databases to N-DEx, recognizing the value of information sharing for the purpose of solving crime and providing a higher level of service to the community.  Sheriff Maketa commented, “This has been better than a year long process for our Office.  CBI has been instrumental in assisting us in this transition, as they opened a pathway for us to link information using the National Data Exchange (N-Dex).  This will help connect information from law enforcement agencies, jails and prisons from around the country and open up pathways to help solve active and inactive cases.”
