Colorado Springs, CO, October 5, 2012 – A fall Clean Sweep event for the proper disposal of residential household hazardous waste items will be held on Friday, October 12, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event will be held in the parking lot south of the Citizens’ Service Center located at 1675 Garden of the Gods Road. From Garden of the Gods Road, take Arrowswest Drive south, then turn left onto Arrowswest Court and follow it to the parking lot. This event, which is sponsored by El Paso County and El Paso County Public Health, is free and open to El Paso and Teller County residents.
“The objective of Clean Sweep is to provide a conveniently located collection site to prevent recyclables and hazardous waste from entering sanitary landfills, where they may affect groundwater,” said Kathy Andrews, El Paso County Environmental Division Manager.
“We’re excited about this partnership with the county to offer these Clean Sweep efforts. Residents participating in these types of events help protect public health by assuring the proper disposal of hazardous waste products. Hazardous waste products can pose harmful health affects on humans, plants, and animals when disposed of improperly,” said Tom Gonzales, M.P.H., Environmental Health Division Director with El Paso County Public Health.
The following items will be accepted for proper disposal:
Paint and paint-related products (stains, strippers, thinners, varnishes, etc.)
Household chemicals (aerosols, ammonia, bleach, cleaners, lamp oil, etc.)
Lawn & garden chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, poisons, plant food, etc.)
Automotive chemicals (motor oil, antifreeze, brake & transmission fluids, waxes, bug/tar/vinyl/chrome/engine cleaners, etc.)
Electronics (computers, printers, scanners, TVs NO LARGER than 32” diagonal screen - no exceptions, cell phones, audio/video equipment, digital cameras, camcorders, fax machines, etc.)
All types of batteries - lead acid vehicle batteries and all types of household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, watch & hearing aid batteries)
Medicines & medical sharps (hypodermic needles, lancets, etc.) from people or animals: Mix loose pills together in a clear, sealable bag. Put other medicines (liquids, patches, ointments, inhalers) in a clear, sealable bag after removing any drug or personal information. Place sharps in either a sharps container from a pharmacy or an empty, clean liquid laundry detergent bottle with a narrow neck & a screw lid.
Paper to be shredded - limited to 2 boxes (1’x1’x1.5’) per household, and
Tires (passenger & light truck - limit 4).
