Colorado Springs, CO, Tuesday, October 09, 2012 – In conjunction with National Association of Counties’ President Chris Rodgers Cyber Security initiative, the El Paso County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution recognizing Cyber Security Awareness Month. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance have declared October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month. The National Association of Counties (NACO) has established Cyber Security Awareness as a principal focus is encouraging the nation’s county governments to enhance their cyber security efforts and encourage their citizens to adopt secure online practices. NACo President Rodgers recently formed an organizational task force to raise awareness about this important issue.
“Counties recognize the vital role that the Internet and information technology systems provide as a core, and essential service in county staff and citizens daily lives,” Board Vice Chair and member of NACo’s Cyber Security Task Force, Sallie Clark, read the resolution into the record. “Internet users and the nation’s information infrastructure face an ominous and increasing threat of malicious cyber-attacks which are resulting in significant financial and personal privacy losses, due to identity theft and fraud. It’s important that our businesses and our residents understand the risks we face in the computer age.”
“The County’s total IT infrastructure is estimated to be $36 million,” Director of Support Services Imad Karaki said. “It’s a huge network and it’s a public investment; it’s how we do business. All of that is at risk with the cyber security that we are all facing in the nation. It’s an unregulated world. It’s Dodge City. It’s who can protect their assets. Cyber Security is the thing we will be fighting for the next decade, if not the next century.”
Karaki went on to say, “Cyber Security if a very real threat. I’m excited to see NACo taking a stand and working with us to develop some defense lines to make sure our networks are protected.”
