El Paso County Parks will host an open house and jack-o’-lantern auction as it share plans of the expansion of Fountain Creek Nature Center. The free event is 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, at the Nature Center, 320 Pepper Grass Lane in Fountain.

The jack-o’-lanterns will be offered to the public through a silent auction during the open house as the future of Fountain Creek Nature Center is discussed. Come see live bugs and snakes and drink a glass of cider.
“We are on our way to our $600,000 goal,” said Dana Nordstrom, Community Outreach Coordinator. “We are currently seeking funding for design, fabrication and installation of our interpretive exhibits. We have successfully secured funding from Great Outdoors Colorado for $330,000, Regional Park fees from El Paso County Parks for $95,000, Friends of El Paso County Nature Centers for $25,000, Aiken Audubon Society for $10,000, Kohl's Associates in Action for $6,000 and Modern Woodmen of America for $5,000.”
With $465,000 raised so far, people can help by buying jack-o’-lanterns and making donations.
The Fountain Creek Nature Center was established in 1992 to connect people to their natural and cultural resources and inspire them to become stewards for the parks and our environment. Its mission is accomplished by offering visitors a “window” into the unique Fountain Creek ecosystem to discover the wonderful world of ponds, meadows, cottonwood forests, cattail marshes and Fountain Creek. The center provides a variety of natural discovery experiences and interpretive exhibits and serves nearly 70,000 visitors each year. In 2012, El Paso County embarked on a plan to expand the Fountain Creek Nature Center by adding an additional 2100 square feet of exhibit space, classroom and meeting room, and storage and office space. As is, the Fountain Creek Nature Center lacks adequate facilities to provide environmental and educational programming for children, students and adults in our community.
